Rod and real...

A river that only exists in VR...
Fishing for faux-fish in VR...

This idyllic river seems like a nice place to relax and maybe do a little fishing. Where can you find it?

You can't... it doesn't exist except as a collection of 1s and 0s in a virtual world created within a device called an Oculus Quest. You wear it on your face like a mask. Images and sounds within the device transport you to fantastic worlds. Some are realistic, others are pure fantasy.

My wife and I bought each of our two sons one of these devices. This particular app allows people separated by large distances in the real world to meet up in virtual reality and share some conversation while casually casting lines into the water to reel in some not-so-real fish.

Last night my sons and I met up at an oceanside beach that you can see below and fished for an hour. It was dusk. Overhead the stars were just coming out. Birds were flying and calling to each other. We could hear the evening insects, the waves lapping up on the beach... A moon slowly moved across the sky. My older son was amazed at how real the environment seemed.

In these days of COVID travel restrictions, it was a enjoyable way to spend some 'vacay' time together with family.

Night sky in an imaginary world...
The end of a perfect day...
