Big Sky Country... up for sale

Mermaids entertain the patrons at the Sip'n'Dip lounge.
Mermaids in motion behind the bar...
A recent online petition in the United States called for Montana to be sold to Canada for the sum of one trillion dollars.

For the remaining United States, that would enable them to pay down a tiny bit of their massive national debt. In return Canada would get to own the recently mentioned Our Lady of the Rockies, the Bleu Horses and the Berkley Pit.

We would also get the very retro-cool and award-winning Sip'n'Dip tiki lounge in Great Falls, Montana which features live mermaids swimming behind the bar. The lovely ladies will also play tricks with bubbles if you leave them a tip.

You've been warned...

Sign of the times

Social engineering at work...
Special parking for special cars...
This was just too much!

At our local mall I was looking for a parking spot when I came across three spots marked like you see above. Exclusive parking for low emission vehicles only?!

Special parking for the disabled... I can get on board with that. Special parking for pregnant women... I can sorta get onboard with that. (Our grand-mother and great-grandmothers were made of sterner stuff... pregnancies didn't slow them down.)

Special parking for families with small children? Uhm, why? Kids have legs and more energy to burn than most adults.

But special parking just because you happen to own a politically-correct type of vehicle. Nope, I wasn't having that. I took my cue from the dual-exhaust Nissan parked in one of the spaces and parked my seven-passenger van in the space next to it in an shared act of defiance.

Fun with feces?

Poop play...
Worst toy trend ever...
Ugh.

How else to describe this bizarre collection of poop and toilet -themed games recently seen in the toy section of our local London Drugs?

As described by their respective boxes:

Toilet Trouble: Spin the toilet paper roll and flush, but watch out... you might get sprayed!
Plunge It: Fart sound F/X
Flush'N'Frenzy: Push the Plunger 'Til the poop pops up!

Ewww.

Slug-ger

A Vancouver Island black slug on the move...
A black slug races to find its next meal...
The black slug is a common sight on Vancouver Island. They are almost ubiquitous as moss.

From Wikipedia:
"The slug covers itself in a thick foul-tasting mucus which serves as both protection against predators as well as a measure to keep moist. It is somewhat difficult to wash off."
"Like all other species of the Arionidae family, the black slug is a hermaphrodite, meaning it can fertilize itself if needed, although a mate is preferred."
Well I think we can all agree that sex with someone else is always more fun than sex with yourself.

On the other hand, if your body is covered with a foul-tasting mucus, sex with yourself is probably the only sugar you're getting on a Saturday night.

Our Lady of the Rockies

Our Lady of the Rockies on the Continental Divide...
Looking down from on high...
Our Lady of the Rockies looks down on Butte Montana from high up in the Continental Divide. She is built in the traditional image of the Virgin Mary although she is dedicated to women of all faiths everywhere, particularly mothers.

Despite the fact that it is the fourth tallest statue in the United States at 90 feet high, the Lady is barely known. If we hadn't read about her online during research for our trip, we wouldn't have known about her either.

Visitors to the statue first attend an introductory video at the ticket centre in Butte. It's a bit cheesy and hasn't been updated in decades, but you can see it for yourself on Youtube.

Butte Montana

Butte Montana...
Butte Montana from the air...
A view of Butte Montana from the top of the Continental Divide... You can see the previously mentioned Berkeley Pit on the left side of the photo.

From many points around Butte you can look up at the mountains and see this ghostly figure looking down.

Butte's mystery figure in the mountains...
What IS the mysterious figure on the horizon?
What is it? The answer will come with our next post.

Big-ass tire

That's a big-O tire!
That's a big 10-oh!
Last summer, my wife and were cycling on Quadra Island, off Vancouver Island's east coast, when we stopped at a popular beach.

Wedged under a large piece of driftwood was this tire... probably one of the largest I have ever seen. Based on my height, this thing was probably about ten to eleven feet in diameter.

It's amazing to think of the forces of nature that enabled it to be washed up on a beach.

The Berkeley Pit

What lies beyond this mysterious tunnel entrance?
The pit is less ominous than it sounds...
Looking like a doorway from some Lord of the Rings epic fantasy this entrance leads to Butte Montana's Berkeley Pit.

What is this mysterious pit?

As described by Atlas Obscura, the Berkeley Pit is one of the few places in the world where you have to pay to see toxic industrial waste...

Not a swimming hole!
Looks inviting, but you wouldn't wanna swim in it...

Decaying

Under an alien sky

Top of Mt Washington ski resort...
Southern Vancouver Island under twin stars...
Google is pretty clever.

I uploaded some photos of a recent ski day at the top of Mt. Washington. Google's robots detected that some of the photos featured overlapping features and promptly stitched them together in this panorama shot. No input (or request) from me required.

Or maybe it's not clever? Yet. You'll notice two suns in the photo indicating that they were taken at different times of the day.

Bleu Horses

A strange looking herd of horses in Montana...
Strange colours for horses...
If you were driving along Hwy 287 north of Three Forks in Montana, you could be forgiven for paying little attention to the herd of horses gathered on an adjacent hill. If you looked a little more closely, you might think that their proportions were a little odd.

These are the Bleu Horses, an art installation by artist Jim Dolan. They are constructed of steel and painted shades of blue and black to provide the illusion of 3D. There is no marker or sign to point them out... you just have to know where to find them.
