Predator

Modern day dinosaur...
Modern day velociraptor...
Grey herons are unique birds. They have these odd quills (feathers?) that stick out from their chest and back.

In flight they look -- and sound -- like miniature modern-day pterodactyls.

They are often preyed upon by local eagles who like to eat their eggs, but they are impressive as predators in their own way. This particular bird at nearby Swan Lake is deadly still and poised to strike at a fish in the water.

In with the new...

Victoria, BC's new bridge...
Sleek and shiny...
Several weeks ago my wife and I paddled down the Gorge 'river' to see Victoria's new bridge from a different perspective.

When the walls come tumblin' down...

The rubble of Victoria's Customs House...
The remains of Customs House in Victoria, BC...
... as John Mellencamp once sang.

In this case, Victoria's iconic Customs House on the waterfront has come tumblin' down as a prelude to some VERY pricey, high-end condos that will be erected there instead.

World On Fire

A Victoria harbour ferry under a smoky sky...
A harbour ferry under a sky of haze and smoke...
BC is experiencing another season of apocalyptic wildfires which has led to it declaring a province wide state of emergency. This follows last year's record breaking wildfire season.

Locally, smoke and haze has been lingering over the region. On the downside, it's making life miserable for those with respiratory issues. On the plus side, it's tinting the sun and dusk sky a pinky-orange hue that makes for dramatic sunsets.

Dog Day Afternoon

A dog chills on the jetty at Fishermans Wharf.
This gal shows us how it's done on a sunny afternoon...
A warm afternoon… sun beating down the jetties of Fishermans Wharf…

What's a dog to do but soak it all up? 😊

No school like old school...

Old school graffiti...
Saw this in Metchosin...
These days vertical surfaces are often covered in graffiti, particularly in urban cores. All that's required for this particular form of art is a spray can or two of paint.

How boring compared to this bit of public art seen on a fence in nearby Metchosin, BC. This is art with texture, the best kind...

Drama in the sky...
Taking a walk at sunset during a recent camping trip to Oceanside on Vancouver Island, we were treated to this awesome display.

Mayne Island

Mt Baker seen from Mayne Island...
Mt Baker framed by Mayne Island...
The Gulf Islands are a collection of smaller islands off the southern east coast of the larger Vancouver Island. They are known for their rural charm and tend to attract artistic back-to-nature types.

My favourite of these islands is Mayne Island. This view of Mt Baker in Washington State is taken from the Bennett Bay beach on the east side of the island.

Spirits and surf / Wraiths and waves

Surfbooards in the mist await riders at Tofino, BC.
Surfboards in the mist...
Even in summer, the weather on Vancouver Island's outer coast isn't guaranteed to be sunny. As often as not, thick morning mist will linger into the afternoon, reducing beachcombers to vaguely seen shadows...

Ripple Rock

The marina at Ripple Rock...
The view of Quadra Island from Ripple Rock on Vancouver Island...
We admired the views from the The Ripple Rock RV and Marina on Vancouver Island when we first stayed here on a whim a couple of years ago.

We recently returned for a few nights and the view was just as magnificent as we remembered it.

Old soul

A cool, classic collector's car...
A cool, classic collector's car...
Recently, my wife and I stopped to admire this old Chevy in the parking lot of our favourite cafe. It was well cared for... clearly it belonged to a classic car lover.

A mysterious dashboard artifact...
What is it?
I noticed this oddly shaped prism, mounted on the dash on the driver's side. I had never seen this before and couldn't guess what it was meant to be. I tracked the owner down in the cafe who explained it to me.

Can you figure it out?
