Wind and waves...

A lone surfer heads out at dusk...
Heading out at dusk...
Tofino is all about the surf. The town is populated with young people who are willing to pay high rents and work minimum wage service jobs just so that they can ride their boards, even if it is at the end of the day.

However, high offshore winds make for lousy surfing since they "blow" the tops off the waves creating frothy conditions. However, it's good news for the wind riders who are starting to become more prevalent in the area.

A two-day gale passed through the area during our stay there. One sunny but blustery afternoon, I busted out my 3m kite. I promptly got lifted about six feet in the air and nearly had my arms torn out of the sockets. At times I was sitting on my ass and the kite was still dragging me across the sand...
