Wayback Wednesday: The Amazing SpiderWoman

No Photoshopping going on here... a few years ago during a Polar Bear Swim, due to a unique combination of angle and timing, I snapped this photo of a woman and her friend emerging from the frigid water.

Dressed for summer

The Lady in Red dressed for warm summer days...

On a recent ice cream cone trip to Victoria's Fishermans Wharf, I stopped in to see a face familiar to this blog, the Lady In Red.

She was dressed for the season with peach coloured hair and a very summery dress. And she was sporting her mandolin which I hadn't seen in awhile. As always, she looked lost deep in her thoughts...

Waiting for someone to ask her out?

The Moss Lady

The Moss Lady of Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, BC...

The Moss Lady in Victoria's Beacon Hill Park is part garden ornament, part art installation. The sleeping giant is 36 feet long and modeled after Mud Maid from Cornwall’s Lost Gardens of Heligan in England. You can learn more about her details and construction here.

Pretty in Pink?

Despite what you think this car IS NOT pink!

This brightly coloured car was one of the entries at a recent Oceanside car show at Parksville, BC. Notice the licence plate? Even the car's hood ornament featured a greyhound sporting pink leg warmers.

So what colour was the car, if not pink? According to the owner, real men don't drive pink cars but they will drive cars coloured fuchsia.

This Sand That

One of the eye-catching sand sculptures at the Oceanside exhibition...

Parksville's highly popular Sand Sculpting Exhibition recently came to an end. This year the theme was 'Things with Wings' and it was entertaining to see the many ways in which that theme was interpreted.

The competitors were vying for $43,000 in prize money and a spot in the 2017 world championships in Dubai! Lots of sand there...

Dionisio Discovered

Secret access to Dionisio Point Provincial Park...

Over the years on this blog, I've detailed my attempts to reach Dionisio Point Provincial Park at the north tip of Galiano Island.

All the literature I read indicated that it could only be reached via the ocean... that native reserves and private land prevented any means of reaching via Galiano itself.

This year I finally set foot in Dionisio... and it turned out to be as simple as driving down a private but seemingly abandoned private road. Locals appear to know of the road access but what happens on Galiano stays on Galiano it seems. They aren't sharing the secret with the outside world.

Philosophical Friday: What the kitten said...

The key to success...

There was a popular poster years ago that showed a kitten hanging off a branch with the phrase "Hang in there, baby!" printed below it.

Everyone knows someone who succeeded despite any measurable talent or skill. Sometimes it comes down to pure luck, but often it comes down to simply "hanging in there" til success comes your way.

Sure a dandelion isn't cute like a kitten and we generally write them off as irritating weeds, but nothing is as tenacious as dandelions.

Movie Night on Galiano

Movie night on Galiano...
As one of the Southern Gulf Islands, Galiano lies just off of Vancouver Island's east coast. Despite its physical proximity though, in many ways it exists in a past decade.
Galiano's sole cinema consists of a sandwich board advertising the once-a-week movie beside the main road outside the local community hall.

It's a long way from the high tech giant IMAX 3D screens and surround-sound audio of the Victoria multiplexes, complete with their bright and noisy concessions and video arcades.

A BC Ferry passes through Active Pass...

Two very different vessels pass through Active Pass between Mayne Island and Galiano Island of the southern Gulf Islands.

One is a BC ferry on its way from Victoria to the mainland. The other is a super-yacht on its way to Victoria for the Northwest Deuce Days weekend. (I know because I saw it docked at Victoria's inner harbour the next day.)

The tidal currents through Active Pass can be formidable to the point where they can almost stop a transiting vessel in its tracks.

Lion Islet(s)

Lion Islet(s) off Galiano Island...

This small island -- not much more than a rock -- is located off Galiano Island's Morning Beach.

The Internet tells me that the island separates into two at high tide, hence, it is known as either Lion Islet or the Lion Islets. I have no idea whether the house is permanently occupied or not, but it seems to be in good shape with a working jetty at one end.

Montague Sunset

The sun sets over Montague Harbour Provincial Park on BC's Galiano Island...

Montague Harbour Provincial Park on Galiano Island is a great place to gather with wine and good friends and family to watch the sun go down over Salt Spring Island to the west.
