The shop at the end of China Steps

Tucked away in downtown Nanaimo are two small streets -- China Steps and Lois Lane.

At the end of China Steps you will find China Steps Emporium.

It's stuffed from corner to corner, floor to ceiling with the most unique, goofy, unusual and plain strange curios and vintage collectibles that you can imagine. It's not as brightly lit as the top photo suggests (I was using flash) and in dim corners you'll find some truly odd stuff.

It's the sort of place that might inhabit a Twilight Zone episode, where the bizarre toys, and figurines come to life after dark to wreak mischief and havoc.

Sidney

Sidney, BC waterfront...

Sidney is located about 26 kilometres north of Victoria on the Saanich peninsula. Except for the mountains in the background, it looks very much like I picture some communities in Florida or California. The waterfront features bright white condos that gleam with glass windows and balconies.

Mt Galiano

Views of the southern Gulf Islands from Mt. Galiano...
Left to right: Mayne Island, San Juan islands, southern tip of Vancouver Island
Mt. Galiano on Galiano Island offers views of the surrounding Gulf Islands, the American San Juan islands to the south and Vancouver Island to the west.

The hike to the top of the 1000 foot high mountain isn't too taxing and only takes about 40 minutes if you're in reasonable shape.

Below is the same view as above seen top to bottom...

49

Rock on Galiano Island, BC marking the 49th parallel...

Galiano Island is one of the southern Gulf Islands off the east coast of southern Vancouver Island. They are known for their laid back ambiance and dry micro-climates. To get to them you need to take a ferry ride -- very pleasant in the summer -- and, if you are lucky as I was on this particular trip, you will sometimes see the orcas that are native to Active Pass.

If you drive to the far end of Galiano from the main community of Sturdies Bay, you'll come across this rock with a plaque. It marks the 49th parallel, the latitude that separates most of Canada from the United States.

Extraterrestrial

Spaceship? Time machine?

My previous post 'The Visitors' was about some very strange people seen outside the Royal BC Museum.

Not sure where they are from, but perhaps they landed in this?

The Visitors

Strange beings from another world? Or just from the mainland?

Okay, Victoria DOES get visitors from all over the world...

...but...

where are these people from exactly?

Gonzales Bay

Gonzales Bay and Gonzales beach are visible from Gonzales Observatory.

It's a popular place for sunbathers and paddlers and is located only 10 minutes from downtown Victoria.
