There's some confusion about Gonzales Observatory which overlooks Victoria and its waterfront from a high point on the Oak Bay border. Although often described as an observatory when it was originally built about a century ago, it doesn't appear to have been one for long, if at all.

Instead it functioned as a weather station for 75 years. I was there a couple of weeks ago and a sign on the door identified it as the headquarters for The Land Conservancy (TLC). The TLC is in financial straits so I'm unclear what the status is of the building.

The distinctive white building is surrounded by a regional park with some of the best views around.

Two hikers enjoy the views of the waterfront from the top of the hill...
