Sculpted in sand

A pained-looking sand sculpture at Parksville beach on Vancouver Island...

The Parksville Sand Sculpting Competition & Exhibition typically runs from mid-July to mid-August. In the past, it was a long weekend event that was spread out over the whole of the Parksville main beach. Unfortunately, a riot in 1997 by a crowd of young people idiots put an end to it and it was cancelled for several years. It was eventually revived in a more controlled format and is hugely popular with tourists and locals alike.
